Duke School of Medicine

The Duke Medicine in Motion chapter strives to carry out the Medicine in Motion mission by providing engaging events centered around physical activity, philanthropy, and wellness in a safe and inclusive environment for members of the Duke and Durham communities. We aim to build a community that is inclusive of all abilities, promotes resilience, and supports the mental, emotional and physical wellbeing of our diverse health professions students and professionals.

New Year's Yoga with Roshini (Duke School of Medicine)

New Year, same fantastic yoga sessions we've come to know and love with Roshini Srinivasan (MS3+ at Duke)! We'll meet on the bottom floor of TSCHE (Floor 0) at 9am for an hour to recenter after the first two weeks of 2023. Please bring your own mat or a towel and water!

F45 Strength Workout (Duke School of Medicine)

We are back at it again thanks to JC and the F45 team! The workout will consist of a 45-minute full body strength workout. Spots guaranteed for first 36 people, and we will have a waitlist in case people can no longer attend. Adaptions for all skill levels, so come as you are as always!

November 13th, 2022 (Sunday @ 10am): HIIT Workout – 2022 Olympiad (Duke School of Medicine)

Come join us in completing the Olympiad 20-minute HIIT workout at the Morris Williams Track! We'll start with a light warm-up and grind through the workout together. Free parking is available at the Science Drive Garage (2 minute walk from the field) with the free after-hours parking pass. We hope to see you there!!

The workout:

Complete 5 rounds, as fast as you can, for time. There is a 20 minute time cap but if you run over 20 min, you may stop or complete the workout. Feel free to click the links below for video demos to familiarize yourself with the exercises before the challenge. Alternatives are available for any exercise. We recommend downloading the SmartWOD Timer before the workout to keep track of your time and rounds!

-20 plank shoulder taps (alternating, 10/arm)

-20 sit-ups

-20 reverse lunge to knee lifts (alternating, 10/leg)

November 13, 2022 (Sunday @ 9am): 5k on Duke Campus – 2022 Olympiad (Duke School of Medicine)

Meet at the Duke track at 9am on November 13th to complete the Olympiad 5k together! Bodies of all sizes and speeds are welcome.

November 12, 2022 (Saturday @ 1pm): Sweat Lab Bike Challenge – 2022 Olympiad (Duke School of Medicine)

Work up a sweat and get those miles in! We've teamed up with Durham's very own Sweat Lab to put on two free classes that are guaranteed to get your heart rate up and put a smile on your face. Register with a friend for extra fun! Classes are capped at 40 each, so sign up early and check both for availability to secure your spot!


Class will start promptly at 1:00 pm so please arrive by 12:45 pm to sign the waiver and get fitted for shoes.


Note: Sweat Lab's bikes don't measure total distance ridden so your participation in this class won't be considered for the Olympiad's fastest 13.1 mile bike ride performance, but you will still earn an entry into the virtual raffle for free Medicine in Motion x New Balance gear!

Bull City Running Co.'s run club may have wrapped up for the 2022 season, but we'll keep it alive for one for week with the Olympiad 5k challenge! Shake out some midweek stress and join us at Bull City Running Co. downtown to run a 5k (or more if you so choose). Bodies of all sizes and speeds are welcome!

Kayla Cheyno

Hi! My name is Kayla Cheyno and I am a first year student in the Occupational Therapy Doctorate program here at Duke. I am from Los Angeles, California and went to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo for my undergraduate degree. I majored in child development and was on the cheer and STUNT team all four years. I love to hike, paddle board, and walk outside. Some of my other passions are meeting new people, being outside, reading, and listening to music. I am excited to be a part of Medicine in Motion because I am looking forward to experiencing new ways to stay active and engage with others.

Lauren Schaeffer

Hi! I’m Lauren and a 2nd year DPT student. I am from Memphis, TN where I grew up doing gymnastics and running cross country. In college I sailed dinghy boats at FSU and love a good day out on the water. Now, I enjoy hiking and participating in local brewery runs when I have free time. Healing with exercise has motivated me to pursue physical therapy as my future career, and I can’t wait to share my passion through Medicine in Motion.

Michael Aiduk

Michael is a MD-PhD student at Duke. He loves team sports (most recently played intramural basketball and ultimate frisbee). He enjoys running, weight training, golf, snowboarding, table tennis, chess, and the sport of marathon Star Wars viewing. When medical school moved virtual during the beginnings of the COVID-19 pandemic, Michael maintained connection and a bit of normalcy via MM Zoom workouts with classmate and fellow MM leader Chris. Michael really appreciated these workouts, and is now excited to help foster community, inclusion, and philanthropy at the Duke MiM chapter.

Hello! My name is Michael Ivey, and I am a current MS2 at Duke Med. I am originally from a very rural area in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Growing up, I was constantly outside: I loved fishing, hunting, and I played basketball, football, tennis, and ran track. As an undergraduate at the University of Michigan, my interest in organized sports transitioned towards weightlifting, hiking, and encouraging my friends to take a work break to even just take a walk with me outdoors. I also am a chatter box who loves making fitness unintimidating. My goal is to help people find what they enjoy so that they can use fitness as a stress reliever – not inducer. Although I am new to the Durham area, I look forward to building a stronger connection between the Duke Med family and the local community. Just remember that fitness should be fun, and you can eat that doughnut!!

Morgan Gumbinner

Hi everyone! My name is Morgan, and I am a first-year Occupational Therapy Doctorate student. I am originally from Palm City, Florida, where I played volleyball and was introduced to weightlifting. I attended the University of Florida as an undergrad, so I am excited to now live in an area where I can hike and participate in outdoor activities without the extreme heat. In addition to hiking, my current favorite forms of movement are pickleball, walking, and weightlifting. I love how exercise makes me feel both physically and mentally and I cannot wait to share my passion with other students through Medicine in Motion!

Howdy y’all! I’m Nick and I am currently a first year PA student (PA-S1) at Duke. I am from Raleigh, NC and grew up running cross country and practicing Karate, Judo, and Jiu-Jitsu. I have never been the type to settle down with just ONE hobby but over the last few years I have mainly focused on Olympic weightlifting, Crossfit, and functional fitness in general; however, running is still one of my favorite ways to clear my head. When I can convince my friends to get outside with me, I enjoy playing tennis and volleyball. I am proud to be a part of the Medicine in Motion team and hope to encourage my friends and future colleagues to continue moving in ways that make them happy. Changing things up every now and then can make all the difference!

Paula Viza Gomes

Hello!!! My name is Paula and I am a 1st year medical student at Duke Med! I am originally from Brazil but grew up in Naples, Florida, where I played competitive soccer for many years. I went to undergrad at the University of Chicago where I ran cross country and track & field. Now that I am in Durham, I stay active in a variety of different ways. I still do distance running and play soccer, but have also added hiking, cycling, swimming, weightlifting, team sports, and recently, any event Medicine in Motion puts together to my routine! The community created through fitness and sports has greatly enriched my life, and so I was very excited to learn about Duke Med’s Medicine in Motion chapter. I am super stoked to be part of the Medicine of Motion team and continue creating a community that helps others be healthier and happier versions of themselves!

Hey everyone! My name is Renita, and I am a first-year PA student. I’m originally from New York and grew up in the beautiful Catskill Mountains. It was there that I gained my love for hiking, running, and just spending time outdoors. Now that I’m in school again, it’s more challenging to make time for such activities but I’m learning to work around the busy schedule! I love meeting others who are excited about movement and exercise and will always be down to meet up for a run!

Roshini Srinivasan

Roshini is an MS4 in the MD program here at Duke. Originally from Akron, Ohio, she completed her undergraduate degree in Human Nutrition with additional study in Integrative Approaches to Health and Wellness. With career interests in Endocrinology, Obesity Medicine, and Women’s Health, she is incredibly passionate about lifestyle and integrative medicine, and has worked for nearly a decade in research in this important realm. She’s thrilled to be part of Duke Medicine in Motion — she truly believes motion is medicine, and her favorite ways to move are through yoga and Indian classical dance.

Hi! I’m Sally and I’m a second-year medical student here at Duke. Growing up I played just about every sport in the book (like soccer, tennis, ice hockey, and squash, just to name a few). In college I ran my first marathon and caught the “running bug” – and never looked back! Since then, I have run 7 more marathons, and I hope to someday run one in every state. Running has helped me find community and relieve stress as a medical student, and I hope to help others do the same with Medicine in Motion!

Hi all! I’m Sara, a medical student at Duke. I was born in Bogotá, Colombia, and grew up in Florida playing soccer and wrestling. In college, I was part of the Latin dance team and slowly got into running. It wasn’t until after college that I caught the running bug though, and for a few years I volunteered as a Girls on the Run coach. Now, I enjoy attending a variety of fitness classes, fusing dance with jump rope, and aimlessly walking. I’m a huge proponent of moving your body, learning new skills, team activities, and inclusivity – excited to be a part of MM!

Trevor Sytsma

Hey there! I’m Trevor – a third-year medical student at Duke and a native of Seattle. By elementary school, I’d caught the running and backpacking bugs and have since enjoyed the camaraderie that goes hand-in-hand with exercise. As a cross country and track athlete in college, I dealt with a lot of recurrent injury that has shaped my appreciation for holistic health and balanced approaches to training. I’m still a runner at heart, but I now love all things endurance sports – biking, rowing, skiing, mountaineering, CrossFitting and swimming (that is, when I don’t drink half the pool while attempting a freestyle!) Plant-powered and sweat-showered, exercise is my refresh button and I’m thrilled to bring Medicine in Motion to support wellness, community building, and social change in the Duke Health community. Come move with us!
