The Duke Medicine in Motion chapter strives to carry out the Medicine in Motion mission by providing engaging events centered around physical activity, philanthropy, and wellness in a safe and inclusive environment for members of the Duke and Durham communities. We aim to build a community that is inclusive of all abilities, promotes resilience, and supports the mental, emotional and physical wellbeing of our diverse health professions students and professionals.

Vinyasa Yoga with Dr. Bauer (Duke School of Medicine)

Unleash the power of mind-body connection and strong postures while grooving to hip hop beats and inhaling sweet aromas as we welcome back Duke's own Dr. Melissa Bauer for the fourth time! Join us for a rejuvenating yoga session led by Dr. Bauer, Associate Professor of Anesthesiology in Duke's Women's Anesthesiology Division. Whether you're a seasoned yogi or a beginner, all levels are welcome.


Just bring your water bottle and an open mind for a rejuvenating experience! We encourage you to bring your own yoga mat, though we'll have plenty available courtesy of the Lifestyle Medicine Interest Group.

Duke Med Run Club Weekend Run (Duke School of Medicine)

Group run #3 will take place at the head of the American Tobacco Trail (Intersection of Blackwell Street and Morehead Ave)! We'll be leading a 3-4 mile run, and runners and walkers of all paces and levels are welcome! 


Free parking should be available all along Blackwell Street, but please let us know if you need a ride there. Open to all health professions students + friends/family/plus ones. Post-run snacks will be provided!

Bouldering at Progression Climbing! (Duke School of Medicine)

Enjoy problem solving and physical activity? Then come solve some physical puzzles with us at Progression Climbing in Chapel Hill on Sunday, May 19th from 3 PM to 5 PM! Here, we'll be led by an instructor in a free 1-hour bouldering class requiring no prior experience followed by an hour for us to explore the rock walls on our own! This 2-hour event will be open to the first 12 folks who sign up below. Please also complete the waiver here when you register. See you on the walls!

Duke Med Run Club Weekend Run (Duke School of Medicine)

Join Duke Med Run Club at the Historic Occonneechee Speedway Trail for another weekend group run! We'll be leading a 3-4 mile run, but there are several short trails and a 0.6 mile loop around the old racetrack to explore if you want. Runners and walkers of all paces and levels are welcome!


Meet in the parking lot at the trailhead, and let us know if you need a ride there. Open to all health professions students + friends/family/plus ones. Post-run snacks will be provided!

Backpacking the Linville Gorge Grand Loop with WAEM & Dr. Roberts (Duke School of Medicine)

We're once again teaming up with the Wilderness, Austere, and Environmental Medicine (WAEM) Interest Group and everyone's favorite kidney doctor, Dr. John Roberts, for Medicine in Motion's second overnight backpacking trip this May! We are considering hiking the ~21-mile Linville Gorge Grand Loop but will adjust according to interest and ability level. 


We will plan to depart Parking Garage 3 (PG3) the morning of Saturday, May 11th, and return the evening of Sunday, May 12th. 


Space is limited to the first 15 folks who express interest, so sign-up quickly and we'll reach out to coordinate logistics, including transportation and backpacking equipment (including rentals through Duke Outdoors Adventures for those in need of gear)!

Fayetteville Spartan Race (Duke School of Medicine)

Join MM at the Fayetteville Spartan Race on May 5! 


Medicine in Motion is BACK once more for the 2024 Fayetteville Spartan Race! We'll be travelling to Spring Lake, NC for a whirlwind Sprint 5k Race with plenty of thrilling obstacles in rugged terrain. The Sprint is a classic obstacle course race, perfect for newcomers and experienced athletes alike.


In preparation for race day, we're partnering with Dr. Kim McNally, Duke Physical Education professor and Spartan Race guru, to host a functional fitness class at Wilson Gym with tips on conquering Spartan Race obstacles. Free to all with a Duke ID. Sign up here!

Functional Fitness with Dr. Kim McNally (Duke School of Medicine)

As the May 5th Fayetteville Spartan Race draws near, we're excited to join forces with Duke Physical Education professor and Spartan Race guru Kim McNally for a functional fitness class in Wilson! We'll meet in the Functional Fitness Space on the bottom floor of Wilson, where Dr. McNally will offer hands-on practice and guidance to conquer Spartan Race obstacles and help demystify some of the equipment available to students. Just bring a water bottle and a towel. Whatever your fitness level and whether or not you're planning to participate in the Spartan Race, ALL Duke health professions student with a Duke ID are welcome to attend!

Obstacle Course Racing Class at WarriorTech! (Duke School of Medicine)

We're heading back to WarriorTech in Morrisville for a free Obstacle Course Racing (OCR) class led by Coach Moseby! We'll learn how to traverse various obstacles, tap into our inner ninjas, and monkey around! No prior experience required. The class is limited to 20 spots, so sign up here, and we'll see you there!

Spin with Dr. Natalie Jones (Duke School of Medicine)

We're excited to partner with Dr. Natalie Jones, Duke's Director of Fitness and Wellness for a free, Medicine in Motion exclusive cycling class! Join us Saturday morning close to home at Wilson gym. Just bring a towel and a water bottle and we'll handle the rest. Fun fact: Dr. Jones biked across the United States in 2021 fundraising for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society! 🚴‍♀️🚴🏿‍♂️ Duke ID required for entry!

Duke DPT Annual 5K (Duke School of Medicine)

It is officially time to sign up for the Duke DPT 19th Annual 5K! 


Please follow the instructions below, registering on this website doesn't mean you are fully registered for the race. 


What is the Duke DPT annual 5K?

This year's race will take place on April 13th  at 10:00 am on the Duke East Campus Loop. 

Register by March 21, 2024, at 11:59 pm to GUARANTEE your race t-shirt! 

The shirt will be a Comfort Colors cotton tee with a vintage-inspired Duke DPT logo. 


Is this a fundraising event?

Yes! All race proceeds go towards the VCU-Marquette Challenge, which supports and funds Physical Therapy research. For more information regarding the VCU-Marquette Challenge, click the link below.

Okay, I'm convinced, how do I register for the race?

This is a 4 step process this year.

 1. Fill out this Google form to register for the race!  - Google Form: https://forms.gle/GzaRBTgiWXNv4MBb7

 2. Load money onto your Flex account. The eAccounts App makes this process simple or it can be done online at https://dukecard.duke.edu/manage-your-dukecard/.

  • Log into your Duke account via the eAccounts app or through the desktop page
  • Click “EACCOUNTS” login link
  • Select your Flex account and click “Add Money”
  • Load $30 into your account through Apple Pay/credit/debit
  • Confirm your Flex account total has been updated
  • *Once you have loaded your FLEX money you are not quite done yet!!

 3. Follow this link to our race website to make your $30 donation. Your $30 donation covers the race shirt and registration for the race.

 4. Email Terry terry.m.brown@duke.edu and Jordyn jordyn.parks@duke.edu a screenshot confirmation of the donation to confirm registration (please include us both on the email).

~ Please ensure you fully complete all 4 steps to ensure your t-shirt and registration for race day!


I know someone who wants to participate in the race, but they are not a Duke student or faculty member. Can they participate in the race?

Yes. The process is slightly different this year. If you are interested in the 5k but do not have access to a Dukelogin to use Flex money, there are two options for payment.

  1. Make a donation with someone else's personal student account with the method listed above that covers you both as racers ($30 per participant; If you use this option, please describe within your screenshot confirmation email with the name of who you paid for).
  2. Pay with cash on the day of the race. (This is only an option for non-Duke students or faculty; please still fill out the Google form). – If you are able to do option 1, please do so. This option should be used as a last resort. **Everyone planning on participating in race day should fill out their own Google form please** 

Are there any new aspects of the race this year?

Also yes! This year's race has a little ~twist~ from last year's event.

You can now sign up in a TEAM for the race to add a little more friendly competition. Teams can be between 5-10 people (minimum of 5) and additional/ bigger prizes will be given for winning teams. Winning teams will be decided based on the sum of the TOP 5 finisher’s places that they finish in (similar to cross-country scoring rules). Feel free to join the Medicine in Motion Team! If you would like to run the race individually, that is also a great option!


Will there be prizes?

Of course!! Prizes will be given to winning teams, individual top finishers, and raffle winners. Prizes include everything from Duke swag to rock climbing memberships to Fleet Feet gift cards, Medicine in Motion swag (hats, stickers and T-shirts) and more!

First Annual Duke vs UNC MedMotion Soccer Match (Duke School of Medicine)

Soccer, crossbar challenge, prizes, and orange slices! What more do you need on a sunny spring Saturday afternoon?


Join us for another match-up in the budding rivalry between Duke and UNC Medicine in Motion chapters! This time around, we'll be competing in a full-field 11 v 11 soccer game on Saturday, March 30th. Please arrive before 1:15 PM to prepare for kickoff at 1:30 PM. We will also be holding a crossbar challenge at halftime – winners get a Medicine in Motion shirt! The game will be broken up into two 45-minute halves with a 15 minute break in between for the crossbar challenge and orange slices 🍊


If you plan on playing, please bring hydration, cleats if you have them, and your inner Messi to bring home the win for your chapter! Spectators are also welcome! Let's see who ~motions~ better on the pitch 🏆⚽️

Hi! My name is Kayla Cheyno and I am a first year student in the Occupational Therapy Doctorate program here at Duke. I am from Los Angeles, California and went to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo for my undergraduate degree. I majored in child development and was on the cheer and STUNT team all four years. I love to hike, paddle board, and walk outside. Some of my other passions are meeting new people, being outside, reading, and listening to music. I am excited to be a part of Medicine in Motion because I am looking forward to experiencing new ways to stay active and engage with others.

Hi! I’m Lauren and a 2nd year DPT student. I am from Memphis, TN where I grew up doing gymnastics and running cross country. In college I sailed dinghy boats at FSU and love a good day out on the water. Now, I enjoy hiking and participating in local brewery runs when I have free time. Healing with exercise has motivated me to pursue physical therapy as my future career, and I can’t wait to share my passion through Medicine in Motion.

Michael Aiduk

Michael is a MD-PhD student at Duke. He loves team sports (most recently played intramural basketball and ultimate frisbee). He enjoys running, weight training, golf, snowboarding, table tennis, chess, and the sport of marathon Star Wars viewing. When medical school moved virtual during the beginnings of the COVID-19 pandemic, Michael maintained connection and a bit of normalcy via MM Zoom workouts with classmate and fellow MM leader Chris. Michael really appreciated these workouts, and is now excited to help foster community, inclusion, and philanthropy at the Duke MiM chapter.

Hello! My name is Michael Ivey, and I am a current MS2 at Duke Med. I am originally from a very rural area in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Growing up, I was constantly outside: I loved fishing, hunting, and I played basketball, football, tennis, and ran track. As an undergraduate at the University of Michigan, my interest in organized sports transitioned towards weightlifting, hiking, and encouraging my friends to take a work break to even just take a walk with me outdoors. I also am a chatter box who loves making fitness unintimidating. My goal is to help people find what they enjoy so that they can use fitness as a stress reliever – not inducer. Although I am new to the Durham area, I look forward to building a stronger connection between the Duke Med family and the local community. Just remember that fitness should be fun, and you can eat that doughnut!!

Hi everyone! My name is Morgan, and I am a first-year Occupational Therapy Doctorate student. I am originally from Palm City, Florida, where I played volleyball and was introduced to weightlifting. I attended the University of Florida as an undergrad, so I am excited to now live in an area where I can hike and participate in outdoor activities without the extreme heat. In addition to hiking, my current favorite forms of movement are pickleball, walking, and weightlifting. I love how exercise makes me feel both physically and mentally and I cannot wait to share my passion with other students through Medicine in Motion!

Howdy y’all! I’m Nick and I am currently a first year PA student (PA-S1) at Duke. I am from Raleigh, NC and grew up running cross country and practicing Karate, Judo, and Jiu-Jitsu. I have never been the type to settle down with just ONE hobby but over the last few years I have mainly focused on Olympic weightlifting, Crossfit, and functional fitness in general; however, running is still one of my favorite ways to clear my head. When I can convince my friends to get outside with me, I enjoy playing tennis and volleyball. I am proud to be a part of the Medicine in Motion team and hope to encourage my friends and future colleagues to continue moving in ways that make them happy. Changing things up every now and then can make all the difference!

Hello!!! My name is Paula and I am a 1st year medical student at Duke Med! I am originally from Brazil but grew up in Naples, Florida, where I played competitive soccer for many years. I went to undergrad at the University of Chicago where I ran cross country and track & field. Now that I am in Durham, I stay active in a variety of different ways. I still do distance running and play soccer, but have also added hiking, cycling, swimming, weightlifting, team sports, and recently, any event Medicine in Motion puts together to my routine! The community created through fitness and sports has greatly enriched my life, and so I was very excited to learn about Duke Med’s Medicine in Motion chapter. I am super stoked to be part of the Medicine of Motion team and continue creating a community that helps others be healthier and happier versions of themselves!

Hey everyone! My name is Renita, and I am a first-year PA student. I’m originally from New York and grew up in the beautiful Catskill Mountains. It was there that I gained my love for hiking, running, and just spending time outdoors. Now that I’m in school again, it’s more challenging to make time for such activities but I’m learning to work around the busy schedule! I love meeting others who are excited about movement and exercise and will always be down to meet up for a run!

Roshini is an MS4 in the MD program here at Duke. Originally from Akron, Ohio, she completed her undergraduate degree in Human Nutrition with additional study in Integrative Approaches to Health and Wellness. With career interests in Endocrinology, Obesity Medicine, and Women’s Health, she is incredibly passionate about lifestyle and integrative medicine, and has worked for nearly a decade in research in this important realm. She’s thrilled to be part of Duke Medicine in Motion — she truly believes motion is medicine, and her favorite ways to move are through yoga and Indian classical dance.

Hi! I’m Sally and I’m a second-year medical student here at Duke. Growing up I played just about every sport in the book (like soccer, tennis, ice hockey, and squash, just to name a few). In college I ran my first marathon and caught the “running bug” – and never looked back! Since then, I have run 7 more marathons, and I hope to someday run one in every state. Running has helped me find community and relieve stress as a medical student, and I hope to help others do the same with Medicine in Motion!

Hi all! I’m Sara, a medical student at Duke. I was born in Bogotá, Colombia, and grew up in Florida playing soccer and wrestling. In college, I was part of the Latin dance team and slowly got into running. It wasn’t until after college that I caught the running bug though, and for a few years I volunteered as a Girls on the Run coach. Now, I enjoy attending a variety of fitness classes, fusing dance with jump rope, and aimlessly walking. I’m a huge proponent of moving your body, learning new skills, team activities, and inclusivity – excited to be a part of MM!

Trevor Sytsma

Hey there! I’m Trevor – a third-year medical student at Duke and a native of Seattle. By elementary school, I’d caught the running and backpacking bugs and have since enjoyed the camaraderie that goes hand-in-hand with exercise. As a cross country and track athlete in college, I dealt with a lot of recurrent injury that has shaped my appreciation for holistic health and balanced approaches to training. I’m still a runner at heart, but I now love all things endurance sports – biking, rowing, skiing, mountaineering, CrossFitting and swimming (that is, when I don’t drink half the pool while attempting a freestyle!) Plant-powered and sweat-showered, exercise is my refresh button and I’m thrilled to bring Medicine in Motion to support wellness, community building, and social change in the Duke Health community. Come move with us!
